— Trigger Warning —
The other day, I read an article by Jane Gilmore, discussing that there was no national outrage or outcry, and little had been said in the media, about the fact that just the other week in Australia, six women were murdered in five days.
Six women were murdered in five days.
As a result, I am working toward and planning to dedicate several Raising Awareness slots to the women who have sadly lost their lives in 2018, in Australia, to domestic violence. Hopefully, if we are reminded each week of their faces, their names, their lives, we will get over our compassion fatigue and start to give a damn about violence against women.
I would also like to take this opportunity to note that during this time, White Ribbon has decided that it wants to be “agnostic” when it comes to women seeking safe and legal abortions. They recently, and very publicly, admitted that they were putting money before the lives of women. White Ribbon has always been problematic as fuck, but I want you to blow this shit open. As White Ribbon and Scott Morrison and our Australian government tries to backtrack for openly fucking women over in 2018 and publicly admitting money meant more to them than women’s health, I urge you to crucify and bury both. I urge you to show Australia, our PM, and our government that WOMEN’S RIGHTS FUCKING MATTER AND WE’RE SICK OF WOMEN DYING AND OUR GOVERNMENT DOING JACKSHIT.
As always, there will be hotline information at the bottom of the page, and you are always welcome to contact me on Facebook or DM me on my Instagram @thingscarlaloves if you need to talk to someone.
If you are aware that someone might be in danger, I implore you to please speak up. You may be wrong, but you may also save someone’s life.
Okay, so I’m not going to lie, I was horrified when I was first researching Gayle Potter for my Sticks and Stones series and I first heard about the vicious, unrelenting cruelty her ex-husband inflicted on her when he allegedly murdered her last week.
I’m horrified for two reasons: One being the way she was murdered (which I will get to).
The second one being is that the only reason that I know Gayle Potter’s name because I started this Sticks and Stones series to highlight the epidemic Australia’s women are facing every single fucking day.
That pisses me off. I should be hearing Gayle Potter’s name from the fucking prime minister.
I should be hearing every fucking day that there have already been sixty-fucking-two women murdered in Australia from the prime minster due to male violence. (And, if we’re being honest, it’ll probably be higher by the time you read this.)
I should be hearing every fucking day how we’re going to fix this problem.
I should be hearing solutions to the fucking obvious: THAT MEN ARE PREDOMINATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST VIOLENCE.
That just because men are also predominately victims, doesn’t mean they aren’t the fucking problem.
But, you know, Gayle had this misfortune of not being murdered by a ‘terrorist’, so our country doesn’t give a flying fuck how or why she died (except for people like Jane Gilmore and Sherele Moody. Jane Gilmore is the creator of Fixed It and Sherele Moody was recently interviewed by the ABC of her creation of the Australian Femicide Map, to highlight how many women had died (allegedly) at the hands of partners and ex-partners.
Gayle Potter was a beautiful, loved mother of three, who lived most of her life in Traralogn in Victoria, Australia.
She was just forty-six years old when her ex-husband, Glenn Martyn, allegedly chased her down with his vehicle before striking her, running her over and fleeing the scene of her murder.
According to reporters covering the area, the small community is devastated by Gayle’s horrendous homicide, and as Martyn’s next court appearance isn’t until February 7, 2019, the police are desperately searching for any information you might have.
If you do know anything that could help the police, please call crime stoppers or make an anonymous report online.
As this appears that the allegedly guilty party may be preparing for trial, I am certain that Gayle Potter’s family, her three children and new partner, would give anything to have the answers they need, and any evidence that can be provided to help provide them closure.
But hey, men are the real victims here.
