Shut Up And Hold My Fucking Margarita (Questions You Wish No One Had Asked): Illegal Immigrants

Okay, so people post some stuff that I just want to scream, ‘What the fuck are you fucking thinking, you fucking dickhead?’

So I’ve decided to create “Shut Up and Hold My Fucking Margarita” questions to abolish some ignorant-as-fuck myths that people seem to earnestly believe because they’ve obviously never heard of Google before, let alone fucking Snopes.

If you see something that makes you think, ‘What the fuck are you fucking thinking, you fucking dickhead?’, please post it below and let me know, so I can tag you/your blog with the recommendation!

DISCLAIMER: CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF THAT I HAVE CREATED BY ALL THE DRINKING POSTS, I ACTUALLY DON’T DRINK VERY MUCH OR VERY OFTEN. THESE POSTS ARE WRITTEN SOBER, SO ANY INACCURACIES ARE LEGIT INACCURACIES, SO PLEASE DO POINT THEM OUT. THE MARGARITA PICTURED WAS TAKEN ON A CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY WITH MY FAMILY WHILE WE WERE OUT AT THE FED IN MARYBOROUGH, WHICH IS A GREAT PUB. CHEERS TO THE FED MAKING MY MARGARITA JUST TEQUILA, LIME AND ICE, WHEN I GOT PISSY ABOUT THE IDEA THERE WAS GOING TO BE LEMONADE IN IT AND THEN EVERYONE WAS LIKE … ‘SO WHAT YOU WANT IS JUST A LOT OF TEQUILA?’ LIKE, SHIT YEAH. MY UNCLE WAS RACIST AND SEXIST AS FUCK, I JUST NEEDED SOMEONE TO LEAVE THE BOTTLE THAT YEAR.

Many people seem to be under the illusion that it is illegal to seek asylum. (America, I know you got your shit, but I’m gonna focus on just my country today, because legit, who the fuck knows what’s happening there anymore. You legitimately have a tyrannical dictator, which is what you fucking conservatives have been harping on for years in regards to gun control, and you ain’t even using your so-called amendment to resolve the fucking solution under the bullshit lie the NRA keeps selling you.)

I imagine part of this image is fuelled heavily by politicians and the media who refer to “illegal immigrants” and “illegal boat people” who are “skipping the lines” to “steal our jobs” or “rape people” (here’s looking at you for that last one, Trump).

I cannot count how many people truly believe that there’s some imaginary queue somewhere in the world – in war-torn and poverty-stricken countries – that refugees need to wait patiently and politely in.

Yeah, the people of Syria are like, ‘Damn, it’s great camping out here being continually shelled as I wait in this comfy line as someone decides whether my life is worth anything.’ PC: Bored Panda

Seriously – to those people, have you even see what a refugee camp looks like? If not, you seriously need to watch Go Back To Where You Came From. And I mean literally right now.

Firstly, it’s not true. There is no line. There is no queue. That’s a fact. End of discussion. You can say you heard it here or there, but at the end of the day, there is no queue.

Secondly, it is not illegal to seek asylum – even by boat.

Australia introduced our law in 1958, after we (among many other countries) sent thousands of people to their deaths during the Holocaust. We decided that our inaction was not worth a certain death. (Remember the good old days when most people unanimously agreed that both Nazis and genocide were bad things?)

We made the decision to offer compassion to those who were truly desperate that they would flee, risk everything, and leave everything and everyone behind.

Most countries have a similar signed agreement, in accordance with the UN’s stipulations. Many countries, currently, are breaking these signed treats – Australia included. In fact, Australia’s crimes towards the mistreatment of refugees is so severe that we’re frequently subjected to UN discussions about how inhumane our detention camps are.

And let’s be clear – if you’re not Australian and you aren’t aware of our off-shore detention camps: they are heinous. These people are treated similarly to that of how Jewish people (and other “undesirables”) were treated during the Holocaust. Many people have committed suicide as they wait for an unspecified time – often years. Some people burn themselves to death it’s that bad. It’s overcrowded.

PC: ABC News. Photos from a whistleblower our government keeps trying to silence. Manus Island detention centre.

Women and children are allowed to have showers longer than four minutes (and sometimes less) if they show the guards their naked bodies.

A young woman was raped on Nauru by a guard, and our politicians refused to allow her into Australia so she could have a safe abortion.

That is what these people face.

This is only some of the cruelty and the depravity refugees are facing in Australia.

And that is illegal. We are breaking our own laws.

To try and silence this, the Abbott government (our Former Prime Minister) introduced laws that prevented people from speaking out. If a whistleblower announced what was happening, they could be sentenced to prison.

These are facts.

Facts are indisputable.

But let’s discuss my first point: why there isn’t a line.

Firstly, imagine you’re having a normal work or school day.

A bomb goes off.

A terrorist organisation is shooting in the streets.

The devastating is overwhelming. People around you are screaming and cry; severely wounded; or even worse, dead.

Perhaps you’ve known you’re a target because you’ve spoken out against terrorism.

Perhaps you fear, because you’re a man, you’ll be killed, tortured or recruited for a cause you don’t believe in.

Perhaps because you’re a woman, you know your likely fate if you stay. You’ve heard the stories. You know what Daesh terrorist groups often do to female prisoners.

You can tell your home has been destroyed and you don’t want to risk going back for possessions that have most likely been destroyed.

Possessions that might identify you or make you more of a target if you’re caught by the terrorists.

So you flee.

What do you have on you?

If it’s a normal work day, I’d have my hand bag.

It wouldn’t contain much, but it’d most likely include my phone and wallet, and a few extra things.

Which is why certain refugees are arriving in countries with phones – because we literally carry them everywhere. It makes a lot of fucking sense when you put it like that, doesn’t it? It becomes suddenly far more likely why someone might have a mobile phone, but not their passport – especially because, you know, people don’t exactly plan on becoming a refugee.

Secondly, millions of people are displaced currently.

No queue can meet that demand.

Millions of people are fleeing.

Millions of people are being persecuted.

Tortured.

Raped.

Killed.

And you think that there is a queue that can keep them safe from that?

A queue that organises and can prioritise the needs of millions of people?

A queue that can discern who needs help the most? A queue that knows how to effectively triage people? Whilst providing food and medical assistance and even education?

There is no queue.

The process you think exists doesn’t. It can’t. There’s too many people in the world for it to be even possible.

And the way we’re treating our refugees is inhumane.

We need to do better.

We need to do more.

This should not be our legacy.

So please, stop buying into this kind of crap. Do yourself a favour and remember that a person fleeing for their lives can’t be illegal.

Seriously, this bullshit makes you like an uneducated wanker, or it tells everyone you’re a terrible human that no one should be around, because who thinks children dying is somehow justifiable?

So, please, highlight my words with your mouse and then right-click “search Google”. Or copy my words, and paste them into Google or whatever search engine you use, and see for yourself: These are facts. Or listen when someone can provide actual evidence as to why something is incorrect.

And if in doubt, please use CARS, because you’ve got to start learning what information to trust and why you’re trusting it.

CARS REFERENCING SYSTEM:

Credibility

Is the claim credible? Is the author writing biased? Is the author credible? An elite education doesn’t make someone more or less credible, so you often have to look beyond a person’s education background.

Accuracy

Do the claims fit in to an accurate timeline? Do the claims made by the author reasonably stand up? If you’re seeing a lot of inaccuracies, especially against the timeline the person is creating, you need to consider if the claim is accurate. Context is often key.

Reasonableness

Mostly, this comes down to whether or not the person is clearly creating a bias. Obviously, everyone has biases. I try and declare mine at the bottom of every post that I think would benefit from extra sources. I freely admit that I definitely have biases, prejudices and will obviously write in a way that conveys what I believe is the truth. That doesn’t mean I’m always right – which is why reasonableness is so important. Everyone is biased, and it’s virtually impossible to not impose your belief, in some form, while sharing. But if the person is deliberately manipulating facts, or omitting information, then they are an untrustworthy source (here’s looking at you, Fox).

Support

Basically, this comes down to whether or not you can find “support” for the claims made. In anything professional, like an essay or journal article, references are essential. However, information can come from popular media sites, or from TV shows/movies, that might require YOU to do some work. I know that conservatives, in particular, seem to detest this as they seem to believe that the other person needs to do all the work, but that’s not how you actually learn. You learn by taking the information and researching it yourself. If you refuse to do this, which is an important part of the process, you will never truly progress in your own education. Out of everything here, I honestly believe this is the most important. If you are unwilling to research things on your own, and instead demand someone else to do the work for you, you have no interest in learning or understanding a different position. You are looking for confirmation bias. The reason I know the Cassidy Boon thing is a hoax is because I looked it up. It took less than a second on my internet connection for Google to say “Yeah, this shit is a fucking hoax”, and by then, I had seen at least ten people share this fucking thing on fucking Facebook, which means the only difference is that you’re willing to put your intelligence in someone else’s hands, instead of learning for yourself.

So do us all a favour in 2019, use your mouse, and perform a reverse Google image search. Or start using Snopes.

Just stop using ignorance as a defence.

Or shut up and hold my fucking margarita.

Yeah, I have similar problems. I’ve stopped talking to one family member, but he was hating on everybody, and I don’t do that, or accept that. I tried explaining why he was being shit, but I don’t think he cares, and I’ve lost too many kids to deal with people being racist and bigoted and everything.

If it helps, your family probably isn’t as racist as my husband’s. I’m not saying they’re white supremacists, I’m just saying they’re advocating very hard for a white Australia and even want the White Australia Policy to be reinstated. Does that make you feel better?
