A lot of my Shut Up & Hold My Margarita posts have been written about Islamophobia and racism, but because of the horrific terrorist massacre that took place at two Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, it currently does not feel right. It feels like any way I would write it, currently, would seem cheap and hollow, and due to the devastation I currently feel regarding Christchurch, I feel like I’d also be taking away from the massacre if I decided to write other topics.
As a result, I’m going to put these posts on hold for a little while, and perhaps put something different for Sundays.
But for everyone in Christchurch, and in New Zealand:
I am so, so sorry. I am in utter disbelief; I’ve always viewed New Zealand as a safe haven, especially since you’ve always been the smarter of our two countries.
I don’t know how or why four people, including one Australian, justified committing this atrocious act.
I don’t know how they’ve dehumanized Muslims so fucking much that they could walk into a mosque, where men, women, and children were praying, and massacred them like they were nothing.
I do know that we’re responsible for it. I do know by allowing hate speech, Islamophobia and bigotry to spread, there are consequences for it.
The only thing I can hope is that this tragic, horrific terrorist attack against Muslims – one of the largest gun-related massacres in the entire fucking world – will start shocking the world out of its stupor, and start forcing people to look inside themselves, and reexamine their hatred.
Other than that, all I can say is that my heart is with you, with all of you. I don’t know how you’re coping with a situation that is beyond our worst nightmares.
As for Muslims living in Brisbane – if you are feeling unsafe, please know that I am someone you can turn to if you need help and you see me out. I can’t imagine how the Muslim community across Australia and New Zealand must be feeling, but please know that if you are feeling unsafe, I will be there to support you.
Christchurch 2019 ❤
