It’s Just A Joke

It’s just a joke.

I hear those words, that same phrase, over and over again.

Adam Goodes, an Aboriginal man and an AFL footballer, compared to Harambe.

Come on, laugh. It’s just a joke.

It’s not like anything serious ever happens to Aboriginal people.

It’s not like Pauline Hanson, xenophobic racist, and unfortunately leader of Australia’s One Nation party, which is a (somehow even more bogan) version of MAGA, which spurts similar rhetorics and white ideas.

“Along with millions of Australians, I am fed up to the back teeth with the inequalities that are being promoted by the government and paid for by the taxpayer under the assumption that Aboriginals are the most disadvantaged people in Australia.” – Pauline Hanson

It’s not like Aboriginal people are more likely to be imprisoned, die in custody, or die from preventative diseases:

It’s just a joke, after all.

And freedom of speech, damn the facts!

Rape threats?

4-creepy-text-man-1562691415462.jpg

A woman tried to sell her phone. This is the guy’s response when she wanted to meet him in a public place. Hilarious.

You’re overreacting. It’s just a joke.

A woman being beaten up because she rejected a guy?

Oh, wait, it’s kind of like these jokes are based on serious things that people don’t find funny. Somehow.

That’s never happened in real-life before. You’re making it too much of a big deal. Social Justice Warriors and their PC culture are ruining the world!

After all, it’s just a joke.

Except, it’s not.

It’s not just a joke.

It is racist when you compare a black man to a gorilla.

Rape threats don’t always just stay as threats. (And even if they did stay ‘just threats’, that’s somehow funny to you? Dude, WTF?)

And too many people are raped every single day for rape to ever be a joking matter.

And how many women have been harassed, stalked, abused or even killed for saying no?

Women being shot beaten or stabbed for rejecting men is not uncommon.

It’s part of the reason why so many women are afraid to say no. It’s why #yesallwomen started trending.

An incel killed six people. He uploaded multiple videos to YouTube explaining his motivations – that the reason behind his murders was because women weren’t sleeping with him.

The responses some men gave?

“The dude was a hero.”

“See, ladies, that’s what you get when you friend-zone someone.”

Because apparently a woman has no right to say no.

Because these are nice guys.

Because nice guys, apparently, if you reject them, are entitled to threaten you.

Harass you.

Abuse you.

Beat you.

Kill you.

But it’s just a joke, right?

I’ve heard this phrase too, and have been accused of “not taking a joke” at times. Which I find is not a response to one’s ability to take a joke overall (because I take lots of non-offensive jokes and give corny puns too), but instead whether one thinks that a hurtful or prejudicial “joke” is funny.
